Sears Tower - November, 2009

Waiting in line for hours was worth it.

The Ataris - November 27, 2009

I owe many months of photos.

I'm going to skip the words and go straight to the pictures. I'm not good with words, anyway.

Hello, blog. I haven't abandoned everything else in my life. Just you.

This is normally where I'd place a well-thought-out excuse for never updating. Unfortunately, I don't have one. I suppose the best I can come up with is that I've recently moved out of the glorified closet I called an apartment into a cozy little home a couple blocks away. Aaron and I lived there for less than a year and still couldn't stay for our entire lease. 2 bedroom, second story of a house for $800 a month will always be better than a studio apartment for $755 a month when they are located in the same neighborhood, no matter HOW nice that studio apartment is. Desperate times called for desperate measures when it came to moving from out-of-state; unfortunately, it didn't take us long to realize how screwed we really were.

It's in the past now. Aaron and I no longer live in one room.
The biggest little joy for me in our moving choice was now having a place to have my piano permanently set up. Setting up my piano every time I wanted or needed to play (which has always been an everyday necessity) in my last apartment was absolutely crushing to my spirits. When it was set up, it would take up the entire room, so it had to immediately be put away the second I was finished; it made me miss the beautiful old piano I had back home that DIDN'T collapse and fit into the closet. In doing so, I also inevitably felt crushing nostalgia for the convenience of all things the way they were back in Michigan.

Regardless, I had forgotten it was possible to say to someone "Sorry, I couldn't hear you, I was in the other room." Imagine what a shock THAT was.

I'm walking with a little bounce in my step these days, which is a very strange feeling, considering nothing is looking up anymore without something dragging it down. However, I'm clinging tightly to inspiration lately and for some reason, it's making me hopeful. And considering that I usually don't take inspiration without a mandatory heaping serving of jealousy followed closely by quick and crushing defeat, the fact that this has not yet occurred is hopeful in and of itself. This is the closest I have ever come to doing what I want with my life, despite how silly or unlikely or outlandish I or anyone else seems to think it is. Now let's just hope I don't lose my nerve. Which I will. High five.

A list, for the inevitable TLDNR moment (I can't blame you):

-- I've been writing blackouts for some Second City shows lately, which has been an excellent time-killer, as well as a nice break from the traditional improv.

-- The funniest thing to happen to television since Arrested Development and the most exciting thing to happen to me since I found out the dark chocolate sauce we use at work is vegan is finally here. As a classically trained pianist and singer, it's refreshing to see a show that makes me fully aware that I am, in fact, a loser, and likely always will be (musical theatre as my official major probably won't help anything, either).

-- I work at Argo Tea now. It's full-time and I don't stand around selling overpriced handbags and convincing people to ruin their credit score for an additional 10% off their first purchase.

-- The leaves haven't changed from green, it was 65 degrees two weeks ago, and weather reports suspect snow later this week. The day I wake up this year with snow on the ground, my fist is going to clench and go sailing through my freshly painted wall. My heart will always remain in the midwest, but these 7-month winters are intolerable. I'm not even old enough to purchase an alcoholic beverage and I'm already counting down the days until I can retire to Florida.

-- I'm flying out to Nashville, Tennessee, later this month to shoot a wedding for a couple I not only do not know, but have never even spoken with. I was commissioned by my uncle to do so, and I'm actually looking forward to it. Being that he has far more cameras than I do, he was kind enough to lend me his Canon 50D to warm up to before shooting the entire wedding. I told film I just wanted to see other people for a while, but don't worry guys: we're not breaking up. I've even purchased a lens for the occasion (that's a lie, but the occasion was all I needed to convince myself to spend more money I don't have) and it cannot arrive soon enough:

    Delivery estimate: October 16, 2009 - October 21, 2009
    Shipping estimate for these items: October 13, 2009 - October 14, 2009
    1"Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens"

    GODSPEED.

The rest of the time, I'm at home, not unpacking and not organizing. And once we're settled and once I'm through with doctors and once we've purchased some furniture that ISN'T kitchen chairs and once we're out of debt, etc. etc., maybe we can finally adopt a puppy!

Tell yo crew to be eas-ay,
Heidi Uhlman
